How about one rule.....

No asking about how to get magicJack to work on your ATA until magicJack allows BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

How about a rule where you must search for your problem first on the forum instead of asking for help on a problem that already has a post. Because as magicjack gets more popular there will be more people joining the forum asking the same question over and over and this will get very confusing and will make it difficult to try and fix new problems that will come up. This site is more popular than magicjack.com for tech help.

I doubt there is anyway to make people use the search function or rummage thru the site before they ask their question. For a couple of groups I am on I keep a file on my desktop with the standard answers to the most asked questions along with a link to where they can go for more information. I then just copy and paste it.

Ok, how about someone volunteer to sift through the site and collect all the useful info and put them in FAQs. Any volunteer? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I would be more than glad to add to a FAQ, I already sift the forum trying to find answers,I use search alot, but like kumar mentioned it would have to be created first.

My profession happens to be helping large companies and government agencies to organize knowledge and find the information that they are looking for. So perhaps I can help.

I agree that it is desirable to get people to search before posting. While we may not want to force people to do so, we can steer them toward that behavior through design of the UI. For example, we could make the Search box much more prominent, both in terms of its placement in the screen (e.g. large and centered) and its forward placement in the user workflow (e.g. Search is the first thing we see, while posting requires one or two additional clicks). We could even take it a step further by having a search box pop up before anyone goes to the new post function.

One of my frustrations with forums like this, and this one seems better than most I have visited, is that questions and answers on the same subject get spread across many different threads. Therefore, I suggest a different principle of organizing information here: Have a virtual editorial board limit the number of subjects to which people could post. These subjects should be broad, but not too broad, functional and persistent. Here are some examples, not necessarily in the optimal order or hierarchical organization:

Initial installation
Upgrades
Vista-specific issues
Outlook integration
Audio quality
Complete failures
-dropped calls
-failure to connect
-failure to load
Suggestions for new features and functions
Bug reports and resolutions
Phone number availability
ISP, bandwidth and Internet connection specific problems

Then, if someone want to post a NEW subject, there can be a special forum for such requests. And the user is either re-directed to an existing subject, their post is moved to an existing subject (with notice), or a new subject is indeed created (with notice). What do you think?
