I purchased MagicJack after watching a late nite TV commercial, and reading every post on this site. I actually bought two MJ's, and signed up for the 5 year plan. Total cost, assuming I keep it, is 90 bucks.
A couple of things. I am 49, and have been a cop all my life. I read, but can not understand, the vast majority of the tech tips on this site....I have a basic understanding of computers.
We have two computers at home. My wife uses an iMac for her PHD study, and I use a Toshiba Satellite running XP on my laptop.
I rec'd the MJ today after ordering it on Monday. I did not opt for express shipping.
I opened the box, took the MJ and the short USB cable, and plugged it into my laptop. In my home I have two cheap, no name corded phones (in case of power outage of course)
4 minutes after plugging in the MJ I took one of the cheap phones and called my home number.....it worked perfectly. Call quality was a bit less than my landline phone, but plenty good enough.
My other cheap corded phone was plugged in. It too worked very well. Slightly better quality. I called my new MJ number from my landline, and the caller ID on the phone did not work, however it did on the softphone.
Ok, so for 90 bucks (at least, after 30 days it will cost me 90 bucks) I have a phone service I can take with me when I travel. I can use it as a backup when my wife is on the other phone (we don't get cell service at our home)
I have not activated VM, I don't really care if my phone shows caller ID....
IF this works as it does right now, I am very pleased and glad I purchased it....
As time goes on I am gonna look at some of the tips you guys post, and see if I can get a bit better performance.
On a 1-10 scale, so far MJ rates about a 9 for my needs.....and that is as good as it gets sometimes...... |

| Most people are happy with their MJ purchase and had no issue installing the MJ device. The no Caller-ID issue is a known bug but you could fix that with the 100K resistor mod. |
